Turn over a new leaf this spring!

A very cliched phrase I know, the dictionary definition being – Taking action to change one’s life for the better. At this time of year when we really start to notice the season change it is often a catalyst for us to make changes in our personal life. Chances are that if you are reading this post you have already been spurred into action. The Alexander Technique is a self-help technique that helps to reduce muscular tension. This tension can be caused by many things including – pain, stress, injury or poor posture causing impaired core stability to name but a few. Tension is habitual and quickly becomes the ‘norm’. Our shoulders are barometers of tension – How often do you notice them sitting up around your ears, particularly when you are working at the pc/laptop, driving or in work situations.

The Alexander Technique offers ‘tools’ to improve your awareness of tension and offers simple solutions that can can be incorporated into your everyday life from the first session to decrease tension. These ‘tools’ have the effect of improving balance and co-ordination and core stability which in turn positively impact on for example pain, bad posture and stress. Also with the exam season looming it can be very helpful in reducing those examination nerves.

So to close with another cliche – Put a ‘spring’ in your step , try a session and take advantage of the ‘Spring’ special offer!

Getting ready for Spring

Yesterday gave us a taster of the glorious weather to come. The sun was warm, very little wind and the day had a different feel to it and so did I. Not having to narrow, hunch and tense in response to the cold, wind and rain made such a difference while walking our dog. I felt much lighter with almost a spring in my step!

We tend to become more sedentary over winter when the bad weather stops us from venturing out and this affects our posture and body language. The cold makes us tense and we wear our shoulders around our ears and we tend to be stooped and huddled which becomes habitual even when we get indoors in the warm.

The Alexander Technique makes you more aware of your body, your tension patterns and how you operate in your everyday life. It helps you to become  more balanced and co-ordinated. So why not try an introductory lesson to see how much lighter, how much more centered you feel at the end of 45 minutes of work and leave behind all that winter tension.

Learn a new skill for the New Year

Happy New Year to you all.

The Alexander Technique is a way to change both physical and mental attitudes. A way to re-educate the body back into natural poise and good posture and to gain more awareness. So when our thoughts at this time of year look to change  then learning and practicing the Alexander Technique is easily achievable.

Each lesson builds upon the last and from the first lesson you will have ‘tools’ that you can use in your everyday life to improve balance and core stability, which in turn reduces physical tension and makes us more mindful. These new skills are not difficult to realize as they are naturally how the body would like to function but over the years we get into bad habits. So reminding the body how to achieve good postural habits takes very little effort and quickly the good habits become the norm rather than the exception.

So if you would like to find out more then please do get in touch for a chat and find out how the Alexander Technique could enhance your life this coming year. Also link to Prices for the “New Year Special Offer”.

A Christmas gift with a difference

Christmas can often find us stressed and tense – Christmas shopping, family dynamics, the desire to make things just right and currently the snow! It becomes a whirlwind of activity and often we just don’t stop. The Alexander Technique promotes the notion of stopping, allowing us to be more efficient in our actions, both physically and mentally.

So when over the Christmas period you suddenly feel things are running away from you  just take 5 minutes to stop and take stock of the situation – Sit down, release those shoulders that you will be wearing around your ears, be aware of your breathing, try to empty your mind and allow yourself to unwind for a moment or two. This brief period often gives us the space to then make a more rational plan of our next moves and lessens body tension. This is one of the real benefits of The Alexander Technique that it is a self help technique where I as a teacher give you the tools to become more aware of your self and then you go away and apply the techniques to your everyday life

I am offering a two session Christmas voucher for £54.00 so if you think you or your family or friends might benefit, then this is a Christmas present that will make a difference.

Best wishes for Christmas and do enjoy your festive break.

Autumn is definitely upon us now and we are all starting to react to the dropping temperature – lots of hunching and huddling which increase muscular tension in our bodies. Using the Alexander Technique to help the body stay more open and lengthened reduces the aches and pains we start to feel around this time. It can also improve how we use our bodies in simple tasks such as leaf clearing! In sessions I would as a teacher look at the bad habits we all get into when bending and moving and then work with the client to improve balance, coordination and use of the body in everyday situations.

So why not take advantage of my Autumn Special Offer of 3 lessons for £80 when purchased in November .

I look forward to hearing from you and wrap up warm!

Lost Your Backbone!

We can all get into bad habits with our posture so that we tend to have a held look – A “pull your shoulders back and stand up straight” look or  a collapsed look where the the shoulders are narrowed and rounded and we feel slumped – without a backbone!

The Alexander Technique (A.T.)is a way of refining posture in a natural way. It is a unique method of improving how we manage our bodies in everyday activity. An A.T. teacher will work with a client to improve co-ordination, balance and body awareness – Re-educating the body into good postural habits so that the head, neck and back are co-ordinated and aligned, thus improving core stability and posture and bringing greater ease and freedom of movement to all activity in a natural way.

So we do all have good poise within us, it is just a case of re-learning good postural habits to supersede those bad old ones.

Good “Use” of our Bodies

These light sunny evenings provide the opportunity for far more physical activity, whether it be gardening, watering or increased exercise, to name but a few. The immediate impact for many of us is increased aches and pains over and above that which would be expected for the task in hand – Why? The reason being is that we don’t “Use” our bodies how they were designed, we develop bad postural habits and tension patterns. The Alexander Technique has useful “tools” to make you more body aware, to “Use” your body with more core stability, with better balance and co-ordination and with appropriate muscle tone.

So, next time you fill your watering can and pick it up (or any weight for that matter), just stop and be aware of how you are doing it – Are your shoulders round your ears, have they narrowed and rounded, are you using undue effort and have you bent and twisted your body to compensate for the weight. If so, then the Alexander Technique could be for you!

Posture and confidence

How you stand and walk has a real bearing on your confidence. There are those people who can walk into a room, along a street and you just notice them, they have natural poise and bearing. The Alexander Technique can be really useful in helping re-gain balance and co-ordination in the core of the body and in doing so improves posture. As a teacher I would work with you to improve your walking, sitting and standing – to give you a more confident, natural stance. With improved posture comes improved body use and this could be handy with the glorious summer weather that we’ve got now – No more lower back pain after the BBQ’s with friends, when you’ve been standing for long periods of time and sitting on not so comfortable garden furniture!

And ladies, those summer high heels, they can be worn without pain it’s just a question of technique. Come and find out how.

I look forward to hearing from you and in the meantime enjoy this pleasant weather.

Look Good this Summer…

Stand Tall with The Alexander Technique

What a difference a bit of sun makes – The ability to shed those extra layers of clothing that we have huddled into over the winter. However it’s only when we start to try on Summer clothes that our body image often takes a battering. Those few excess winter pounds and poor posture from the winter chill, mean that even the best cut garments will look average if we present ourselves poorly. The Alexander Technique reminds us how to come up to our full height naturally, how to stand tall without looking held but with ease and to move more elegantly. In short, the Alexander Technique can make you feel taller, slimmer and more confident by using your body in a more balanced, co-ordinated way – Regaining natural poise.

If the above resonates with you, then do get in touch if you would like some more information….. And enjoy the sunshine – Long may it last.

Jane
